Kaotoxin Records – Miserable Fucking Society (split EP)

3 way split

Warning, foul language and loud music ahead. You’ve been fucking warned.

In actuality that is a bit of a misnomer, as you cannot make out much of the foul language on the upcoming split EP from Kaotoxin records. Miserable Fucking Society is a three way EP split (sounds kinky) of three up and coming French acts that blend some of the more caustic elements of metal into a somewhat cohesive sound. While each band has their own unique sound, all three use similar elements of grind core, crust, thrash, death and straight up rock and roll. Grind n’ Roll was a new one, even for this tenured metal fan, but I am definitely enjoying what I’ve been exposed to. While this is billed as an EP we are given 19 tracks to enjoy, quite a deal! So let us take a jaunty stroll down misery lane and spend some time with each of the three bands.

Starting this torrid love affair are seven tracks from Infected Society. Brash and abrasive hardcore punk mixed with vibes eerily similar to the crossover work from Napalm Death (though with the benefit of modern production). The riffs are full speed, though the band draws enough groove and thrash influence to add a unique perspective to their blend of hardcore. To give a one track highlight take a listen to Crack Whores (well, not actual crack whores, the song). It puts the bands insane twist on grove and grind into perspective. The drumming on this song (and all of their seven offerings) is an absolute highlight. Heavy amounts of audible bass and crushing guitars are added to some decent (and bottom heavy) hardcore shouting.

Up next is F Stands for Fuck You. For those expecting singer-songwriter prose set to early 90s grunge… who am I kidding, with a name like that you know exactly what you are in for; and the band delivers on that promise. They bill themselves as grind n’ roll and it is an accurate summary of the band. Take the classic old school grind song structures (short, noisy and fast) and add in modern rock element (riffs, a bit of groove and some pop sensibilities) and that will give you an accurate idea of what you are in for. The guitar tone is thick and hazy with feedback, which provides an interesting juxtaposition to the hammering, brutal drumming. The soloing (what limited amounts there are with song lengths averaging 2 minutes) are incredibly well done. The vocals are the traditional hardcore punk/crust affair and the bass is relegated to the background on the 7 tracks here. Check out the track Sound of Nothing for the excellent, fuzzy guitar lead in, then stay for the brutality.

Finally we have Miserable Failure. Thankfully they do not take their moniker literally. Short, angry and brutal; this IS your parents grind core. Aside from the first track Summoning Chaos (which checks in a little over two minutes) the other four tracks total a little over four minutes of listening. While not falling under the extreme end of grind (where tracks can be under 10 seconds in length) there is enough substance jammed into the brief song structure to make it enjoyable. The track All Women Must Die follows the genre line as close as you can. 49 seconds of blast beats and heavily distorted guitar and bass joined by some of the most intense screams you will hear of any of the three bands here.

With 19 tracks covering all ends of the extreme end of the hardcore and grind scene there is quite a bit to enjoy here. By its nature the songs are quick and to the point; no needless progressive noodling or black metal oppression to be found here. A great roundup of up and coming talent with some fresh ideas on an old genre.
