Machine Head – Killer And Kings (Vinyl Single)

photo 2Machine Head, as we all know, are hard at work recording their new album which is due out later on this year. “Killer and Kings” although in rough demo version is the first new material from Machine Head in three years since releasing Unto The Locust. Because of the exclusivity of this release – on Record Store Day, no less – then you are probably wondering if it is worth it. My main question is; Will “Killer and Kings” make the final album? Or is this just a massive tease on their part?

This single only contains two tracks, the second being an Ignite cover of “Our Darkest Days / Bleeding” which seems logical reading Robb Flynn’s latest diary entry he posted on the Machine Head Facebook page, saying that he had really gotten into Incite so it makes perfect sense as to why Machine Head are covering it. Listening to it a couple of times, Machine Head have definitely gone back to their ‘The Blackening’ style of writing but it’s almost like cutting away the fat and making the song more lean.

“Killer and Kings” is fantastic, and only heightens my anticipation for this new Machine Head album, coming out sometime later on this year, but really I don’t mind when it will come out as it seems like they are taking their time on this one. To me (only remembering it’s a demo at best), it’s definitely one of the best Machine Head tracks I’ve heard in years. Many people will disagree with me on this, but I feel that Unto the Locust only had a few good select tracks on it, one of them being the record’s title-track. The cover is from a band who I know nothing about or have nothing of their music, but I like how a few bands I know and really like are into all these punk bands – it’s awesome!

So if you’re reading this far along and wondering still if all the fuss around the new Machine Head is worth it, I would say take it with a grain of salt because it’s still a demo but be very excited as this might be Machine Head’s year. I really like the new single and, again, I’m going to state that it’s one of the best Machine Head tracks I’ve heard in years.

This is a good indication of the up-and-coming Machine Head material that will be coming out soon. If you haven’t managed to pick up the Record Store Day vinyl that came out, I’m highly recommending that you pick it up.

RATING: 7 / 10
