Mastodon – “High Road” (Single)

Mastodon-high-road-artSo the first material from Mastodon’s upcoming album Once More Round The Sun is a track that (to be completely honest with you), I’m not really bothered about. Sure, everyone’s going to licking their lips at the prospect of new Mastodon, but for me in comparison with The Hunter and how much I felt let down by the hype, I simply do not care for new Mastodon music.

After listening to it and again I’m not caring at all. Yes, the guitars are there, really heavy…but anything ‘Mastodon-like’ is far gone from the music. It feels totally alien to hear guys of this caliber of music – Remission, Leviathan, Blood Mountain and Crack the Skye – to write such radio-friendly rock music. I’m not even going to call Mastodon a metal band anymore, as this single sounds way too simplistic to even call it anything that Mastodon would write.

Apart from what’s been mentioned above there’s not much else to say. I’ve listened to this single plenty of times since it was released and every time I finish, thinking about what to say, I can’t help but find more things to criticize. If the upcoming album follows this theme (no one can really say yet), I won’t be partaking in Mastodon’s rise to mediocrity.

RATING: 2.3 / 5
