While I write this review I realize the need to address just how huge the Nuclear Blast label has become. I’ve even felt the need to add Nuclear Blast as a posting category for these reviews. It’s great, it means that metal is still successful, growing and important to the people who both write and listen to it. What can you take away from this paragraph? Metal is alive and well within Nuclear Blast.
Soulfly aren’t exactly new to any metal scene. Their history predates the existence of the Soulfly moniker and importantly continues into the future. In fact, “Archangel” is the band’s tenth (full-length) release and while the band’s winning formula hasn’t changed, it’s an impressive record from start to finish. Now I know what you’re thinking; it’s just another Soulfly record. Well, yes… and no. For Soulfly ‘Archangel’ highlights a sense of strong musicianship, backed by intense aggressive song writing. Even with the addition of guest vocal work and an extended track listing, Soulfly manage to capture every nuance that launched them past Max Cavalera’s name and create something truly spectacular.
So what does the newest Soulfly offering have that makes all this hype worthwhile? It’s simple really, Soulfly have launched a sound that is continuously them, reinforcing it with some of the thrash-ier sounds the band has ever put on disc. It’s great really, freshening the overall feel of the band and revitalizing the music at the same time. For the band it’s still very much a family affair. With Zyon on board behind the band’s percussive element (as per the group’s last few releases) Soulfly has really taken shape, bringing every element together naturally. This is a machine of sounds, and everything is working towards moving this heavy metal machine forward.
Apart from what’s mentioned above, there’s nothing exactly ‘new’ from the Soulfly camp. Most of the musicians are veterans and those that aren’t have the metal flowing through their blood. I don’t exactly have too much to say on this particular release as the music actually speaks for itself. Just sit back and bang your head to some solid tracks.
