Norway’s legendary Mayhem headlined a night of ferocious black metal at the Royale theater in Boston, Massachusetts on February 18. The band is celebrating the thirtieth anniversary of its infamous debut, De Mysteriis dom Sathana, by playing the album in full at each show on the tour, which wraps up tomorrow. Support was provided by New York thrashers Black Anvil and veteran act Inquisition, who sounded more like a horde than the duo they are. With intentionally grim lighting and flash photography banned, the show felt more like an invocation than a concert, and Mayhem’s eerie exhumation of De Mysteriis lived up the legend in every way.

Earlier in the day, Mayhem bassist Jørn Stubberud (Necrobutcher) spent time at Armageddon Records signing copies of the band’s new retrospective book, “The Death Archives.”
